Our History

In 1918, when Jamaica was still finding its educational footing, a small school was established in the cool, verdant hills of Moneague, St. Ann. Clapham Primary began as a beacon of hope for families in the rural communities of Clapham, Rio Hoe, Dalrumple Park, and surrounding areas, offering children access to education that might otherwise have been beyond their reach. For over a century, Clapham Primary has adapted and evolved while maintaining its core commitment to serving students from modest backgrounds. The school's multigrade structure became not just a practical necessity, but a unique strength that allows for personalized attention and peer mentoring across age groups. This intimate educational setting has fostered countless success stories, with graduates carrying the school's values into communities across Jamaica and beyond. Throughough the decades, Clapham Primary has weathered economic challenges, natural disasters, and social changes, always emerging stronger through the collective effort of dedicated educators, supportive families, and community leaders. The school's motto, 'Together We Build; Apart We Fail,' reflects hard-learned lessons about the power of unity in overcoming obstacles. Today, under the leadership of Headmistress Jody Somers and Board Chairman Kenneth Brown, Clapham Primary continues to honor its founding vision while embracing modern educational approaches. Our four active clubs - Mathematics, Literacy, 4H, and Environmental - represent our commitment to developing well-rounded students who are prepared for the challenges of the 21st century. As we look toward the future, Clapham Primary remains steadfast in its mission to provide quality education to every child who walks through our doors. Our 55 current students carry forward the dreams and aspirations of over a century of learners who have called this special place in the St. Ann hills their educational home.
